Mrs Higgs’ Woodland Camp

Welcome to Mrs Higgs’ Woodland Camp

This peaceful, private cottage will make you feel like you have stepped half a century years back in time. Built in 1835 as a hunting lodge this is a charming little stone house. Since then, the forest slowly reclaimed it, and despite modernity advancing forward all around, for Mrs Higgs’ Cottage tucked away in the woods, time stood still.

The space

After some gentle landscaping, and some minor renovations, Mrs Higgs’ Cottage now provides a perfect retreat from modern life and an experience of a bygone lifestyle.

The entrance hall leads onto a small landing and the two bedrooms upstairs – one double and one twin, with beds made up and ready. Down a ladder style stairs (this might be too steep for small children or carrying babies) there is an open plan kitchen and seating area with a cosy sofa and log burning stove – perfect for winters retreats. The shower and loo are in a wooden outhouse accessed at the back of the lodge, with hot shower, hand basin and flushing loo.

The cottage is totally off grid, being too far into the woods to be connected. Electricity is from solar panels, water is pumped up from the original spring well (luckily you don’t have to fetch it in a bucket like Mrs Higgs!) although bottled water is provided for drinking. Heating throughout is from wood burning stoves only, however a few concessions to modernity such as a gas stove, instant hot water and a flushing loo, mean that it’s not too primitive. There is also a wonderful hot tub right next to the cottage which guests can use in total privacy.

Set within a 2,500-acre private Estate, remote retreats like this are few and far between, with privacy, peace, and only deer, owls, badgers and other forest dwellers as your neighbours. If you love the idea of proper solitude for a few days this is the place for you.

“We loved this place it did exactly what we wanted it too … we wanted a place with no distractions, that it intimate and cosy . A true break from the day to day hustle and bustle of modern day life We got engaged whilst there so no doubt will be back again soon 🙂 “

“A beautiful location and a very private setting makes this place a must visit. The woodland is very well managed and has lots of wildlife. You are free to explore and can get some great views at the top as it is on a hill. The snow had hit hard before I was due to arrive and the whole place had frozen. Katherine was really helpful and made sure I still had the perfect stay. She kept me up to date with great communication and went out of her way to make extra arrangements when other hosts would probably have cancelled. A big thank you for everything (including the cake!) Even though there was still snow on the ground I enjoyed the hot tub and kept warm by the fire pit or the numerous log burners! You can get a phone signal outside if you need one but why bother as it’s a perfect excuse being ‘off grid’. This place is the best of both worlds as it can feel a bit back to nature but has lots of little extras that make all the difference. A truly refreshing break”

“What a beautiful and quaint little cottage! I booked this as a Christmas present for my parents. They had the most magical time! The cottage was spotlessly clean, the log burners warmed the house brilliantly and the hot tub was bliss! They said what an amazing experience in the most wonderful of settings, it is like stepping into a story book! Thanks to Katherine for making it so special! Kayleigh :)”

“Absolutely loved our short stay, the location is perfect if you want absolute seclusion and a good rest. The place is well equipped for all your needs, set in beautiful woodlands, great for long dog walks. I would recommend going in a 4×4 vehicle as the drive up to the lodge is quite rocky, don’t forget flip flops for the hot tub and access to the toilet! I definitely recommend this place and will be booking again :)”
